3/25/19 Square That Up Please? – “Did You Believe The Russians Too?” Tuesday, Mar 26, 2019 by: Max Powerposted in: Square That Up Please Now that the Mueller report is out the 24 hour news cycle can reaccelerate again. We all know the Russians despicably infiltrated our election process. Which is unbelievable as I thought all the bad guys agreed to draw the line at stealing military/technology secrets? I wonder if the US has been guilty of manipulating other countries governments. Topic for another issue. I want to shine a light on exactly what the Russians did do. The platform which enabled their espionage is tech titan Facebook. The phenomenon this entity became a short decade ago is transformational, allowing us to effortlessly and effectively connect with the rest of the world. The ever attendant dark side component lurked patiently in the shadows of the breadth (is there depth there?) of our bonds and the ingenuity of the Truman Shows we created. The Facebook powers that be truly wanted to change the world for the good…that resonated with them anyway. I certainly believe this was their initial altruistic intention. Eventually using your keystrokes to influence your buying decisions became irresistible. You didn’t think the ads for the type of crock pot you shared being the core of the killer dinner you created (pictures to prove it) began to populate your browser was a coincidence. Did you? Retailers have crafted messages for centuries to shape buying decisions so no big deal…I hope? Question for you, do you catch many of the online subliminal suggestions advertisers bombard us with? When you do notice them are you appreciative of their creativity or offended by their manipulative process? Using online searches, shares, reading/entertainment choices, etc. to sway has taken the marketing/manipulative process to a level never seen. I believe using emotionalized human tendencies (which has proliferated while critical thinking descends) to sell a product falls under the timeless universal law of “Buyer Beware.” Google, Amazon, and Facebook (Big 3) have now taken this behavioral marketing strategy passed the bounds of ethical (IMO) to serve Wall Street’s incessant quarterly bottom line. They have infiltrated the recesses of our thinking process or more accurately emotional knee jerks which drive most of our purchasing decisions. We’ve all been there two weeks post purchase saying “What the hell was I thinking?” For most law abiding citizens this exchange of preferences/personal info for convenience/connection is the closest we come to selling our souls. Criminals do it all the time for illegal reasons. The Big 3 benefit immensely from this more and more nuanced strategy which vies for your $ and attention. Remember you are not the customer, the advertiser’s are. Recently you have become the product which we’ll discuss another time. So Russia jumped on the band wagon of mind/mood manipulation to attempt to influence our recent elections. Instead of using product placement, they used embellished, okay fake news stories to stoke our outrage. And it worked! From that tactic/outcome we blame the Russians and/or the other side of the aisle. As has become quite common in our culture we miss the golden opportunity to take accountability (a process incredibly helpful in more clearly seeing the playing field). In this instance someone messed with our mind influencing us to do something we initially had no intention of doing. They have to pay! Just sayin’.
